What's A Zine? Part 2
Written by Elizabeth J.M.W.

Who makes zines?

Anyone and everyone can make zines. As stated before, zines can be on anything you like. If you have a fascination with toasters you could make a zine about them. If you want to speak out about something, you can use zines to do so. Often zines are made by just one person, but they can also be put together by a group of friends, or there can be zines that are organized by an editor who collects writing, artwork and ideas from all sorts of people, which would be a compzine.

Where do I start?

If you're interested in zines, you should find ways of getting your hands on some. Listed at the end of this article are a bunch of internet links, title of zines about zines, and books on zines you can use that will tell you more about zines and about places where you can find them. Once you've read some zines, you'll probably want to make your own.

How do I make a zine?

Basically, anything goes, but it's probably a good idea to have a bit of a plan about just what you want your zine to be about. It's also a good idea to plan on how many pages you are going to have – if you're going to fold your pages it would have to be in a multiple of four.

Zines can be printed on all different colours of paper, can come in all different sizes, can be folded creatively, stapled together or sewn with ribbons, come with little trinkets... the possibilities of how to put a zine together are just as varied as the subject of the zine.

One hard thing about making zines is finding enough funds to make copies. Usually you would sell you zine for about a dollar or two, to help cover printing and mailing costs, but rarely does a zinester make a profit from their zine.

Making zines is a labour of love, something people do because they want to be creative and share their thoughts and ideas. This is one of the things that make zines so special.
